No sooner have United returned for pre-season training than they are now about to embark on a pre-season schedule of warm-up fixtures. In truth this year that schedule is a bit of a mixed bag and this is no doubt a consequence of the change in management. Louis van Gaal famously complained about the exacting nature of United’s pre-season tours, so this year the original plan in advance of the Community Shield was to play only two fixtures in the far-east. A good distance from home but minimizing the amount of on tour journeys by just reducing the number of fixtures.
That has now been changes and after a short Journey to Wigan Athletic on Saturday United and the fixtures in Asia United will return for a fixture against Galatasaray in neutral Sweden. There is then the matter of Wayne Rooney’s testimonial at Old Trafford before the game against Leicester City at Wembley.
This programme of fixtures will be interesting for a couple of reasons. Firstly it will give fans an insight into Mourinho’s proposed method for the season to come. The other interesting aspect of pre-season will be the insight into the players the new manager is likely to favour. In truth however this second issue might not be quite as clear as a many players will be returning to the club at different times after their exertions over the summer with their respective national sides.
www.manutdtactics.com will again be keeping a close eye on the forthcoming fixtures over the next few weeks.
